ABOUT
The Courtyard Project is a collaborative effort to rehabilitate South Portland High School's interior courtyard as an outdoor classroom and service-learning site
Mission Statement
The SPHS Courtyard Project will enliven the academic life of South Portland High School in four core areas. These are our goals:
Students To empower students as co-designers, builders, and caretakers of their learning environment; to involve students in the ongoing creation of a communal space that evolves with each generation Community To strengthen school-community relationships through shared participation in the courtyard’s construction and use; to expand service-learning opportunities that enable students and community members to directly invest in our school Learning To broaden the variety of pedagogical modes and contexts available to SPHS students and teachers; to encourage experimentation in educational methods, projects, and student products Environment To improve the physical and mental wellness of our students and staff by offering safe, reliable access to the outdoors; to increase knowledge of human-environment interactions through hands-on learning in areas such as ecology, sustainability, and the natural sciences |
Who We Are
The Courtyard Project is an initiative of the South Portland High School Sustainability Committee: a team of teachers, students, and staff who lead efforts with community partners to improve sustainability education and practices in our school and throughout the district.
